TI 2026's Swiss Stage Isn't Tradition. It's Valve's Second Try.

Swiss only debuted at TI last year. Here's exactly how the format that decides who survives Shanghai actually works.

The International 2026's group stage uses Swiss pairings for only the second time in TI history. Here's how the format works, and why every round from Round 3 on carries real elimination stakes.

Sixteen teams land in Shanghai on August 13 with one goal: survive five rounds of Swiss play before the playoffs even start. If the format sounds unfamiliar, that's because it is. Despite how often it gets treated like a TI institution, this is only the second time Valve has ever used it at the main event.

Swiss Is Not a TI Tradition — Yet

TI2023 ran a two-phase round-robin: 20 teams split into groups of five, playing best-of-two, with one team eliminated per group before a second phase set the playoff bracket. TI2024 used a straight round-robin — 16 teams in two groups of eight, everyone playing everyone. Swiss didn't appear at TI until 2025. TI2026 isn't continuing a tradition. It's Valve running the same experiment back a second time, unchanged.

How the Pairings Actually Work

Sixteen teams, five rounds, every series a best-of-three. After each round, teams are grouped by record and paired against opponents with a matching win-loss line — a 2-0 team plays another 2-0 team, never a team that's 0-2. Nobody faces an opponent with a wildly different record, which is the part that trips up newcomers expecting a straight round-robin or a single-elimination bracket. Swiss is neither.

Where a Record Actually Takes You

Finish the Swiss stage in the top three and a team advances straight into the TI2026 playoffs — no further group-stage risk. Finish 4th through 13th and it's a single-elimination Elimination Round, best-of-three, win or go home. Finish 14th through 16th and the tournament is over, no playoffs at all. The playoffs themselves are double elimination, best-of-three throughout, with a best-of-five Grand Final closing it out August 20–23.

Why Round 3 Onward Is the Real Show

The format's actual appeal isn't the pairing logic — it's what that logic does to stakes. By Round 3, records start to separate, and teams sitting at 0-2 are one loss from elimination with zero playoff consolation. That's true knockout pressure inside what looks, on paper, like a group stage. Nothing in this piece is a prediction about who ends up in that spot — the format itself is what guarantees somebody will.
